With the hot days of summer approaching, who wouldn’t jump at the chance to enjoy a frosty lemonade atop their own roof-top garden? In addition to being natural refuges in increasingly concrete landscapes, green roofs offer a variety of environmental benefits. They are becoming major selling features of new townhome and condominium developments, and appeal particularly to buyers looking to align their urban lifestyle with their environmental ethics. DfR anticipates that demand for green roofs will continue to grow, especially as municipalities see how they contribute to sustainable urban planning targets. Despite their popularity, however, green roofs are proving to be a hornets’ nest for the insurance and construction industries as a recent seminar in Vancouver indicated. DfR appreciates the complex structural, maintenance, and risk-management issues that must be resolved before green roofs get the green light from all parties involved. Vancouver's recently formed Green Roof Task Force will be doing just that, gathering information and making recommendations to ensure green roofs don't become another housing liability.
